Two Decades of Spreading Smiles

2005
Dr Krishnamurthy and Dr Pritham started the Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Cleft Unit, and Smile Train partnered with them, offering funding for children with clefts from underprivileged backgrounds. The load of cleft in society was massive as there wasn’t much awareness, and they had to operate a lot of unoperated adults. The centre slowly became recognised as one of the country's busiest cleft and maxillofacial units.
2010
With a vision to offer comprehensive care for children with clefts, Dr Krishnamurthy invited Orthodontists and Speech therapists to visit the unit to start providing treatment under one roof. At the same time, a one–year full-time Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences affiliated fellowship program was initiated (details – redirect to Fellowship Page).
2013
Crystallisation of a multi-disciplinary team, and along with dedicated surgeons and anaesthetists, we were joined by full-time orthodontists and speech pathologists. A total of 5,000 cases were treated in these eight years.
2021
The multidisciplinary team and patient-centric care led to our unit being recognised as the first Cleft Leadership Center in India (one of the six in the world). This status meant that our team had additional support from Paediatric Dentist, Clinical Psychologist, and Nutritionist. Although designed for individuals with cleft in mind, these services are also helpful for individuals with craniofacial or facial differences.

A CBCT scan is integral in planning cleft alveolar bone grafting, orthognathic surgery and distraction osteogenesis. It can also be used when airway analysis is needed, like in cases of Sleep apnoea.
Materialise NV is a company at the forefront of 3D planning and printing. Our centre has licenced software for virtual surgical planning of routine and complex orthognathic surgery, craniofacial and reconstructive surgery. The tool is also used for volumetric analysis required in research. We also have a complete in-house 3D Printing facility to complement our Virtual Surgical Planning.
From digital impressions to 3D printing facility to virtual surgical planning, our centre has kept pace with modern technology to offer our patients the best quality care.
